Terranea Holiday Traditions

terranea treeLooking for seasonal events in a scenic setting? Look no further than Terranea Resort, where the 5th annual Terranea Traditions celebration is now underway.

If you’re staying at the resort, there are plenty of hard-working elves who want to make your visit extra special. Throughout the month of December, you can arrange for your child to receive an “Elf Tuck-In” with a holiday treat and a special bedtime story. At the Little Elf’s Workshop, a.k.a. the Tide Pool Kids’ Club, kids can make a variety of holiday crafts including a Gingerbread Sand Castle. And daily in the lobby living room you can hear Terranea’s elves sharing holiday stories and cheer (from 5:00 to 6:00 pm).

Want to do some private, after-hours shopping? Through December 24, you can reserve a private shopping session at marea boutique and select your holiday gifts during non-business hours. (Minimum 7 shoppers required.)

Upcoming special events include Santa’s Holiday Breakfast on December 21 (seatings at 9:00, 9:30, and 10:00 a.m.) that includes a ballroom breakfast buffet and a special visit from Santa.

If you’d like someone else to do the Christmas cooking, you can order a special Christmas Meal To Go from Sea Beans, with curbside pickup times available on December 24 and 25.

Or if you’d like to enjoy a special holiday meal at Terranea, you can choose from Christmas Eve dinner at mar’sel, a Christmas Eve buffet at Catalina Kitchen from Spain and Italy, a Christmas Day Grand Ballroom buffet, a Christmas Day brunch at Catalina Kitchen, a Christmas Day beer dinner at Nelson’s with locally brewed beers, an elegant Christmas Day dinner at mar’sel served family-style, or a Christmas Day dinner at Catalina Kitchen also served family-style.

Traditions-Spa-2013-FeetDoes it all sound overwhelming? You can always relax with a special holiday treatment at the spa, such as a Holiday Bliss treatment ($295 for 90 minutes) that uses sea algae, concentrated silk, bamboo sap and plum wine to leave your skin purified, energized and delicately scented. You could also go for the Holiday Rescue Package ($250 for 120 minutes) that includes one hour of personal training or Pilates, followed by a one-hour massage.

And if you’re just looking for a fun spa treat with some friends, go for the Mint Chocolate Mistle-Toes ($80 for 60 minutes) for a pedicure that includes a butter brulee whole milk soak, followed by a hot chocolate mask and then minty shea butter. What’s more, when you finally emerge from your spa treatment, you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful holiday decorations that light up Terranea every night this season.

Terranea Social Media Ambassador 2014

Some special views (and a wedding) at Terranea

Some special views (and a wedding) at Terranea

It’s been a glorious, eye-opening, and exhausting weekend, but at the end of it all, I am so proud to announce that I will be one of three Social Media Ambassadors for Terranea Resort in 2014.

I am beyond excited because Terranea is such a special place for me and my family, and because I can’t wait to share all I’ve learned (and am continuing to learn) about this beautiful destination.

Some of the beautiful patterns I've been admiring while walking around Terranea

I’ll be sharing this experience with two other social media experts, Jen Ho and Clint Schaff, both of whom are incredibly knowledgeable and a lot of fun.

It’s going to be a great year – so stayed tuned for more on this space about Terranea!

A Terranea Excursion

It has been an amazing weekend so far at Terranea, filled with sweet accommodations, jaw-dropping sights, tasty food, and more. Even though we thought we “knew” Terranea, we seemed to discover something new every time we turned a corner. A few highlights from the weekend include:

The unbelievable, “pinch-me” views from just about every spot on the property:

room with a view

The pancake topper bar that awaits you in the morning outside of Sea Beans:

The amazing trails that wind through the resort, with 14 acres of  native plants covering the hillsides. If you’re lucky, especially on the weekends, you may spot a beautiful wedding.

The majestic peregrine falcon that keeps the property seagull-free.

The flowers and blooms in a wide array of colors.

And of course all of the friendly and helpful faces of the staff at every turn. This weekend is flying by way too fast. But Terranea, you’ll always have our heart!

“Delivery Man” Special Delivery

DeliverManI’ve got two kids, and that life is plenty complex, so it’s hard to imagine having….533 kids? But that’s the madcap dilemma that Vince Vaughn faces in “Delivery Man” – a Disney movie coming to theaters on July 22. In the film, Vaughn plays an affable underachiever looking for his purpose in life, when he finds out he’s fathered 533 children through anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years ago. Now he must decide whether or not to come forward when 142 of them want to meet their biological father.

vincevaughnFor many people, the natural instinct might be to run as far away as possible. But Vaughn begins to realize that this is the “one big thing” that can bring meaning into his life… and he decides to take on the role of “guardian angel” for his offspring.

Why am I writing about it today? – Because I’m just one of 533 bloggers doing a “special delivery” preview of the movie today. This morning all 533 of us are proudly presenting this new, never-before-seen clip on behalf of Disney.

Enjoy!

The Lone Ranger

Are you ready for some good, old-fashioned summer adventure? Do you love a classic Western? Or are you just looking for your Johnny Depp fix? Either way, you’re going to have a great time at The Lone Ranger, the new Disney film opening July 3.

loneranger“The Lone Ranger”is an edge-of-your-seat adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes.  Native American warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption. Need any further encouragement? The film was brought to you by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

The story is told in an imaginative fashion, through the eyes and ears of a little boy hearing a very elderly Tonto detail his adventures with the Lone Ranger. The action in the film is huge and it’s infused with humor throughout. Johnny Depp fans will find echoes of his Jack Sparrow character: Tonto, like Capt. Jack, seems to be one of the only true “good guys” among hundreds of criminals and corrupt officials. All in all, it’s quite a ride. Our nine-year-old was completely captivated from start to finish.

“The Lone Ranger” opens nationwide July 3. Blogger disclosure: We did not receive compensation for this post, although we were invited to a complimentary media screening of the film.

Knott’s Berry Farm Summer

One of our all-time favorite family amusement parks, Knott’s Berry Farm, has a lot more fun to offer this summer. The Knott’s Boardwalk now features three new rides that are guaranteed to please just about everyone in the family: the Coast Rider roller coaster, the Surfside Gliders aircraft ride, and the Pacific Scrambler spinning attraction.

knotts roller coasterOur new favorite is the Coast Rider, a ride that gives guests the sense of riding along the California coast, with a 52-foot ascent and 1,339 feet of track filled with hairpin twists and turns. Scary? Maybe a little, but our six-year-old demanded to ride it again and again.

knotts log rideAlso new this summer is a multi-million dollar refurbishment of one of the Timber Mountain Log Ride, one of the country’s oldest and most popular log rides. The Timber Mountain Log Ride, first opened in 1969, is still one of the most elaborate in the country. The ride takes guests through an 85-foot-high by 330-foot-long mountain range themed to a nineteenth-century lumber camp. Housed in an eight-story building, it includes 24,000 gallons of water that circulates free floating logs past a variety of mechanical figures and  animals… all culminating in a wet and wild forty-two-foot free fall. It continues to be the most popular attraction in the park, carrying over 2.7 million guests every year.

Of course that’s just the start of it… The Knott’s Berry Farm property includes the Knott’s Berry Farm 160-acre theme park with dozens of rides, shows and attractions; the 321-room Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel; the Knott’s Marketplace shopping and dining area; and the 13-acre Knott’s Soak City Water Park. In other words, you can have just about all of your summer amusement park, dining, and soaking fun all in one place.

Knott’s Berry Farm, 8039 Beach Boulevard, Buena Park CA 90620. (714) 220-5200. View the summer hours here.

Blogger disclosure: We were invited to attend a special morning at the park; however, we did not receive compensation for this post. All opinions expressed are our own.

Stressed out? Looking for a departure from the ordinary? We’ve got a destination that’s just around the corner but is guaranteed to take you away: Terranea Resort, where you can wrap yourself up in all of the ocean’s natural glory without even leaving the South Bay.

After a recent overnight at Terranea, we were positively hooked. This 102-acre luxury eco resort is bounded by the ocean on three sides, so you can barely even turn your head without seeing spectacular ocean views every way you look. The resort offers 582 guestrooms and suites, including bungalows, casitas and villas; as well as restaurants; a full-service spa and fitness center; an award-winning golf course; three swimming pools; kids’ club; a full range of outdoor recreational activities; and event spaces.

We started our evening with dinner at mar’sel, and were delighted to find that there was literally nothing between our table and sweeping ocean views. When we told our server that we felt like we wanted the night to last forever, she told us to take our time; the table was ours for as long as we wanted it. We enjoyed a wildly delicious meal, highlighted by the most tender Wagyu beef we’ve ever tried, and homemade English muffins that magically appeared at our table each time a new batch came out of the oven.

For adventurers, there are miles of oceanfront trails at Terranea ranging from easy to moderate. Don’t miss the trail down to the rocky beach, where there are kayaks lined up waiting for your next adventure. If you have sturdy shoes, climb the extra 50 yards or so to peek in to the ocean cave, where fossils and sea creatures are right at your feet. While we were at the rocky beach, we were lucky to see the remains of what must have been a beautiful seaside proposal at the beach.

water slideIf you have kids, you won’t want to miss the main pool area, with its kid splash zone and water slide. Sure, adults get their own pool, but it’s hard to stay away from that slippery zig-zag slide. When you’re all done, you can warm up in the hot tub, or cool down at the spa. If our kids had their way, we’d still be there now. We’re planning our next trip already.
